There is nothing in the world to beat the joy of parenthood. The sense of discovery when a woman conceives, the humbling awe that she has created another human being, the transformations in her body as her baby begins to grow, and the overwhelming feeling of joy that the baby is her contribution to the continuity of time, of her genes and her family line.
And she has a right to expect to be treated specially and taken care of. In fact it is a momentous and joyous decision that will alter her life forever. And it ought to be considered as such.
But the reality of it is that her ecstasy has to be tempered when she makes that all-important and necessary visit to the facility where her delivery is scheduled, be it a hospital or a nursing home. There is a marked gap between what it provides and what pregnant families expect.
Birthing is not an illness. On the contrary, it is a wellness event associated with joy and celebration. Hospitals in India have been designed and staffed as facilities to diagnose and treat illnesses. They fail miserably to address the unique needs of maternity care: home-like ambience, compassionate staff members, visits by innumerable family members and friends, and more importantly, impeccable hygienic conditions. On the other hand, nursing homes offer a marginally better environment and personalized attention, but lack immensely in terms of medical care capabilities.
A Birthing Centre is a significant step forward in the development of maternity and women's health services. In our country, this is a new concept and is another stride towards the emergence of specialized hospitals. A major difference between Birthing Centres and Hospitals is that hospitals create policies to care for people who are sick, while Birthing Centres design programs for healthy pregnant women. Birthing Centres offer the personal yet comprehensive care that every expectant mother and her family deserve.
And why not? The birth of a child is an event, which heralds a new beginning in the life of the family. This new beginning is an event of wellness and excitement, which must not be confined to any traditional sterile institutional environment. A lifetime of special memories deserves a very special beginning.
Apollo Hospitals introduces The Cradle
Most often ‘birthing’ is the family's first experience with a healthcare facility. But for too long women have had a limited choice on the facility itself. It is usually either the neighbourhood nursing home or a general hospital, which are either under-equipped or cold and impersonal. Having a baby is a joyful and fulfilling time for a woman. But the lack of proper facilities makes delivering a baby an experience filled with indifference, discomfort and uncertainties. It is, therefore, very important that the first encounter should be one that leaves a lasting impression of high quality facilities and services.
The Apollo Hospitals Group unveils “The Cradle”, a facility to ensure just that. A revolutionary concept in childbirth and maternity care in India, The Cradle is a high-end, premium boutique birthing centre, which has been conceived exclusively to satisfy the service and quality needs of a younger generation of Indians. The Cradle is unlike anything you have heard about or seen before. Think of it as a world-class healthcare facility that offers 5-star hotel amenities. This facility offers services of international standards in a premium environment while creating an unforgettable experience for the mother and her family in welcoming their bundle of joy into the world.
The Cradle will be the newest and most complete women’s center in India dedicated specifically to the physical and emotional needs of expecting mothers and newborns. It will be designed to provide an atmosphere of elegant comfort and relaxation, supported by caring nursing staff and medical professionals. The staff will consist of highly trained, experienced and compassionate team of nurses and physicians, including obstetricians, neo-natologists and pediatricians.
Like its motto, ‘Delivering Joy’, The Cradle will help every baby arrive into the world in unique fashion, while taking care that the mother enjoys every comfort of home. At The Cradle, she will find no cause for complaint.
Conception, pregnancy and motherhood are important chapters in a woman's life. Why then should the actual experience of where and how a woman delivers be anything else? The Cradle will ensure that birthing will never be the same again. For the mother. For her baby. And her entire family!

The LDR Suite
Labour-Delivery-Recovery (LDR) Room
You won't find the LDR room in any regular hospital or nursing home. The LDR room provides a homelike ambience and acts as an integrated labour, delivery and recovery facility.
Thanks to the LDR room, the expectant woman is no longer required to be moved from one place to another. Labour, delivery and recovery can all happen in the comforts and privacy of the LDR room itself.
Convenience and comfort are paramount at The Cradle. Where maternity homes and hospitals cart an expecting mother from one room to another for every stage of the birthing process - Labour, Delivery and Recovery (LDR), The Cradle is conceptualized to provide Single Room Maternity Care, in which Labour, Delivery and Recovery take place in a single setting. Each LDR room is furnished with an imported multipurpose bed and all the equipment necessary for a safe and comfortable delivery.
All LDR Suites will be decorated in soft, soothing colours and will be furnished with a multi-position birthing bed that adjusts to a variety of birthing positions to enable labour and an easy delivery. Every LDR Suite will have a comfortable recliner, a rocking chair, television and music system to soothe the mother. Private showers will be available in each room to help the mother relax during and after delivery.
The LDR Suites are designed close to the Operation Theatres, in case the mother needs to be moved during the delivery process for an unplanned surgical procedure. Following delivery and recovery in the LDR Suite, the mother and child will be shifted to a suite/ VIP room, where they will recuperate till they are ready to leave.
Labour-Delivery-Recovery (LDR) Suites are designed to accommodate an average length of stay of 12 hours. They will operate on a 24-hour basis and will be fully equipped with all the medical necessities for an uncomplicated birth. Much of it will be tucked into closets or behind wall hangings, yet within easy reach of the doctors and nurses. A push of a button, and all the equipment, secreted away in the panels of the room, will be made available to the doctor for a safe, healthy delivery.
The Cradle is the first to introduce the LDR room concept in India

Obstetrical Ultrasound Unit (OUU)
The OUU is home to a state-of-the-art 4D, real-time ultrasound imaging system, which is primarily used in analyzing fetal development. The Cradle also has a laboratory
One of the key procedures is obstetric scanning which can be performed at any stage throughout the pregnancy. Early scans are performed to assist in dating the pregnancy, twenty-week anatomy scans provide detailed information about the development of the baby and growth scans provide on-going information on the growth and development of the fetus.
It will be possible to provide pictures of the baby for the mother to take home. The ultrasound images/ scans can be recorded and made available to the parents on request.
The laboratory and a small x-ray unit will be close at hand to enable the clinician to obtain diagnostic and radiological tests, whenever needed. A small but adequate blood storage and dispatch area will guard against the possibility of post partum hemorrhage

Integrated Care
Doctors and patients have the support of on-call specialists such as nutritionists, physiotherapists, cardiologists and urologists at The Cradle.
In addition to fetal medicine, chromosomal analysis, genetic counselling and computerized maternal serum screen programs, services also include patient education, therapy and health programs for expectant women (aerobics, Lamaze classes, yoga, etc.)
An educational/aerobics area will also be provided within The Cradle. There will be fitness consultants and aerobic classes for both pre and post delivery to help the mother deal with the changes in her body. Low-impact aerobics, for mothers in their fourth week of pregnancy, will help tone and build stamina for the labour. Family bonding is promoted through antenatal classes, yoga classes, educational programs for parents, special classes for siblings, and a lenient visitation policy.
In the post recovery stages, the mandatory day or two’s stay after birth will be a smooth sailing for both mother and child as there will be a fleet of services at The Cradle that the mother can avail. Apart from counseling for postpartum blues, breast-feeding, guidance in infant care and child rearing, mothers can consult with dieticians and nutritionists for both their own and the baby’s dietary requirements.

Care and Comfort
Studies have revealed that the state of a mother’s mind and her emotional health affect the baby.
The aim of The Cradle and everybody in it is to ensure a happy mom and baby.
The Cradle will encourage the father to participate in the birthing process. The mother needs the partner’s support and studies have revealed that there is better bonding between father and child with more contact within the first few hours of birth. There are facilities like a reclining chair/bed for the father or the support person to spend the night if the mother so wishes.
At The Cradle, there will be a few spacious suites, deluxe rooms and private rooms, each resembling a spacious “home-like bedroom”. Done up in a tasteful manner, every room will be equipped with telephone, refrigerator, multi-channel music and a large screen cable programmed TV, which will make any mother feel instantly at home. Each will have its own bathroom and shower. All the suites will have an additional sitting room/ lounge to where family and friends can be entertained.
The restful ambience, the lack of noise and the hustle common to hospitals contribute to alleviating a new mother’s anxiety and stress, enabling her to relax and give birth to her child.
